As technology advanced over the next two decades, applications were created to help manage evolving digital operating systems, but it wasn’t until the 90s that cloud technologies reached maturity with the launch of the World Wide Web in 1991. The term “cloud” was coined initially for something known as grid computing.


Our modern-day understanding of the cloud was realized by Amazon Web Services (AWS) in 2002 with the launch of a public cloud, which was designed to alleviate the burden of maintaining data servers. As the internet and demand grew, so did cloud development.


What the Cloud is Today and Where It’s Headed

Cloud computing today is viewed as a communication network of digital servers providing data storage solutions. Instead of organizations maintaining all of their IT services and data onsite, they connect to remote data centers using the Internet, through which they can access all of their IT services. This includes databases, data storage, and computing power.


Just as cloud computing has advanced and grown to what it is today, this technology will continue to evolve with advancements and as demands and needs change. The more data we utilize, the more advanced storage solutions will be needed, not just for businesses, but for personal use, and economic IT infrastructure as well.  The world is evolving and the cloud is evolving with it.

Trends and Innovations Shaping the Future of Cloud Computing

1. Edge Computing

As the name implies, edge computing places cloud computing services at the edge of the network. By bringing the data processing to the edge of the network, it brings it closer to the data source, which allows information to be computed and then returned to the user in near-real-time. This provides numerous benefits, such as greater data privacy, reduced latency, cost savings, and faster processing. 


2. Multi/Hybrid Cloud

Initially, most organizations that used the cloud did so by partnering with a single cloud provider. However, as storage needs grow and change, we will start to see companies using multi-cloud or hybrid cloud services. This simply means that they will use multiple cloud providers, both private and public, to harness the services from each that suit their specific needs. 


3. Serverless Cloud Computing

With serverless computing models, instead of relying on physical servers, application codes are only run when needed and are managed by a cloud provider. This means only paying for the resources when code is executed as opposed to paying for access to an entire physical server at all times, which can significantly reduce the cost of running an application. 


4. Quantum Computing

Quantum computing is a trend we are starting to see that uses quantum physics when processing data to run more complex algorithms. This enables improved data capacity as it allows for even greater amounts of data to be processed in a shorter amount of time because the data is stored in the form of a qubit, which is a much simpler form. This not only means faster processing but it is also significantly more cost-effective.  


5. Artificial Intelligence

With the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning is having a major impact across various sectors. Everything from finance and healthcare to logistics and marketing is being impacted by AI and its use alongside cloud services. 


Since AI-powered systems can make data analytics more effective with smart pattern recognition, AI can make cloud computing more efficient as it processes vast quantities of data. AI is also improving the automation of cloud services, allowing for better insights, and enhancing end-user experiences. 


AI-powered systems use machine learning to evolve over time, meaning the more they are used alongside cloud services, the better and more effective they will become at processing and analyzing data.
